UPDATE DBPR

(Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation)

HAS ORDERED THE CLOSURE OF ALL AMERICAN LEGION POSTS

July 12, 2020

To All Members of The American Legion, Department of Florida

Subject:         Closure of All American Legion Posts

On July 8th, the Deputy Secretary of the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) sent an email in which he wanted to clarify the Secretary of DBPR's Amended Emergency Order 2020-09 issued on July 1st. This email can be downloaded by clicking on the subject of this email or by clicking on the image of the email below.

The American Legion Department of Florida was never officially notified of this email or order by anyone from DBPR, we had to find out about it from other sources !

This email states: "Further, DBPR has elected to enforce closure of private social clubs, lodges, fraternal groups, benevolent associations, American Legions, and VFWs to prevent social gatherings and the transmission of COVID-19."

So, effective immediately, all Posts in the State of Florida have effectively been shut down. We are not allowed to be open to have meetings, bingo, or any events of any kind. The only activity permitted is as stated in the email.... "Locations that are licensed for food service by any other agency may only sell for consumption off the premises in sealed containers."

I know this is disappointing news and nothing that anyone of us wants to hear. Even more difficult as we hear on the news that large venues like Walt Disney World and Universal Studios are open! We are doing our best to see what we can do to have this order changed so we can get our Posts back in operation and serving our Veterans, their families and the Community. We have many folks working on explaining this to our elected officials. We are trying to have our Posts re-opened.

If you have contacts or know anyone that has some close contacts with any of our elected officials that might be able to assist us in this effort, please take the time to email our Judge Advocate team at JudgeAdvocate@FloridaLegion.org and advise them so we can do everything possible to have our voice heard.

We are told the reason for this action is that our members are in the at risk age category. I fear that many do not understand that our Post Homes are much more than a "Bar". These Post Homes or Social Quarters are the nucleus of what is The American Legion. The center of our activity, where our programs incubate, where our Service Officers see Veterans. Where our Veterans can meet their fellow Veterans and counsel each other. Where we can get together and work out the many programs we do that benefit the communities in which we live.

Again, I want to thank all for what you do each and every day for our Veterans, their families and the communities in which we live.

For God and Country,
William "Rick" Johnson, CommanderThe American Legion
Department of Florida

Subject: Virtual Unity Ride - FINAL District Totals

Good morning,

First, let me start off by saying CONGRATULATIONS to each and every one of you for making our very first Virtual Unity Ride a HUGE success! The coronavirus pandemic forced us into canceling an annual event that we normally look forward to. However, in true Florida Legion Rider fashion, you took on the challenge and still provided the necessary support to our veterans!

Not only were we able to collectively raise over $60,000 for PROJECT VetRelief's Suicide Prevention Initiative, but we had more participants over the entire state riding for one cause... ending veteran suicide! In fact, all but 2 Districts had Riders represented.

Now, for what you all have been waiting for... The 15th District is this year's winner of the coveted District Trophy!! The trophy will be awarded during the Fall Conference in November, so we hope to see a large representation from the District. A SPECIAL shout out goes to Chapter 152 in District 15 for bringing in over $10,000!! What an outstanding accomplishment that you achieved, especially during uncertain times!

Below is the final leader board with the breakdown of results.

COOL PRIZES

We will be sending out emails to everyone who earned incentives from their fundraising efforts. Since there will not be a Department Convention this year, we are hoping that the Legion Riders District Chairmen will be able to help us distribute everyone's items. This will help us save on shipping costs. Items will come pre-packaged, so you won't have to assemble them or figure out who gets what items. More information will be sent later.

SURVEY

Additionally, we are putting together a Survey to send out to everyone who participated to get feedback on our first virtual event. We are looking to incorporate something similar in future rides so that more people can participate. Please encourage everyone to fill it out so that we can make next year's event even better!

Again, THANK YOU for all that you continue to do for the American Legion and the veteran community. You guys truly are making a HUGE impact and we are grateful for your support and dedication!
